BPC-157 Naming and Aliases: How Listings Spell It
Published
Product titles for research-use chemicals are written by many different people, and the same compound can appear under several spellings. For a price index this matters: if two listings use different names for one compound, they need to end up on the same page, and listings for a different compound must not be merged in by mistake. This note covers the names used for BPC-157. It is limited to naming and identifiers and does not describe any use or effect of the compound.
The common spellings
The hyphenated form BPC-157 is the name this index uses for the compound page. Two variants are frequent in listing titles:
- BPC 157, with a space instead of a hyphen
- BPC157, with no separator
All three are listed as names for the same record in the public chemical database PubChem (compound record CID 9941957, where the record title is given as "Bpc-157"). The spaced form "BPC 157" is also listed there as an entry term. Capitalisation differs between sources ("Bpc-157", "BPC-157"), but it does not change the identity of the name.
Other names and code designations
The same PubChem record lists further synonyms supplied by data depositors. Among them are:
- Bepecin
- the code-style designations PL-14736, PL-10 and PLD-116
PubChem notes that depositor-supplied synonyms are collected from individual contributors and that some names may be filtered out as erroneous; a name appearing in that list is a pointer, not a formal standard. The PubChem synonyms are supplied by the submitting parties and do not represent an endorsement.
Identifiers that are independent of spelling
Spelling varies, but database identifiers do not. In PubChem the BPC-157 record carries:
- CAS number: 137525-51-0
- Molecular formula: C62H98N16O22 (as computed by PubChem)
- Amino acid sequence: Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, also written in one-letter code as H-GEPPPGKPADDAGLV-OH
The sequence has fifteen amino acid residues. Because identifiers such as the CAS number do not depend on how a name is spelled, they offer a check when a listing title is ambiguous.
Salt and form labels
PubChem also lists synonyms such as "BPC-157 free base" and "BPC 157 trifluoroacetate". They are filed under the same compound record as the other names, so they refer to the same peptide sequence rather than to a different compound. A listing that carries such a label still has its pack content recorded exactly as stated on the listing.
How this index matches the names
The BPC-157 compound entry in this index carries the aliases BPC157 and BPC 157, so a search for any of the three common spellings leads to the same page. The entry is classed as type peptide. Listings are assigned to the compound when the product name on the seller page matches the compound or one of its aliases. Where a title does not make clear which compound a product contains, the listing is left out rather than guessed.
Names on a price index are a tool for grouping listings. They do not indicate anything about the content, purity or suitability of a particular product.
